Re: My 1st Interview

A couple of things worth noting with regard to my interview. i think these highlight the point that the Police already had their minds made up as to me being the murderer. Firstly, I mentioned that Gorman was squaring up to someone in the club and that outside the club it appeared he was been chased back down the stairs by a group of people. It turned out to be the same person in both instances but that person was never interviewed as a suspect. There were statements given that it was Tony Crown involved both inside the club and outside on the stairs, so why was he never questioned under oath. Secondly I was asked on a number of occasions if Gary Sewell who I refer to as squirrel ( the friend of Gorman ) had hit me that night. I replied no. Remember that because I will produce his taped interviews which he 1st states that his hands were swollen as a result of hitting me. When told by the Police that I said he didn't hit me he then says he did them by punching a wall. Why didn't the Police look at him closer? It was months later that I actually saw photos of his hands. He had gone to hospital because they were so bad. They looked bloody terrible, but that aside why would he lie about it and why did the Police not take it any further after he admitted lying. For me I told them everything I knew, it was a murder for Christs sake and I wasn't going to withold anything even the back hander I gave Gorman I knew nobody had seen me do it but I told them anyway.
Remember the map I posted with the different routes on. It was the Police's case that I 1st chased Gorman along the blue route. Then without anybody seeing me ( because there was not 1 statement that suggested I did ) I went back to the club and then took the red route. Are they thick or what !! Lets face it the chance of me going back to the club covered in blood and not been seen by anybody would have been pretty bloody remote. Again for me they wasn't interested in finding the real killer they discarded anything that didn't point in my direction.

R.
Yes
Q.
Is there is anything you want to tell us about what happened yesterday.
Let's start from square one. What's your profession. What do you do for a living.....
R.
I'm a heavy goods driver and also I work in the Cellar Bar as a doorman...
Q.
Only the Cellar Bar or anywhere else....
R. .
Just the Cellar Bar....
Q.
And who do you work for....
R.
Erm, Neil WILLIAMSON....
Q.
Okay, and when do you work there, every night or does it vary...
R.
Er, Fridays and Saturdays....
Q.
Only.....
R.
Yes, I did work Thursday once when they asked me to...
Q.
And do you always work with the same people as a doorman.
R.
Generally, it's usually the same people....
Q.
And who are they....
R.
Rod MOORE, lan DIGGINS I believe his name is, erm there's somebody called
Rory, I can't, I don't know his surname, erm and another bloke called
John, but neither of them two were on last night...
Q.
Okay, so who did you work with last night then as doorman...
R.
Rod MOORE and lan DIGGINS...
Q.
And the bar staff I take it were just the normal. Who runs, who is the owner, who runs the Cellar Bar....
R.
I believe Neil WILLIAMSON is the manager....
Q.
He's, the young Neil, is it two Neils, is it, or his dad lan is it....

Q.2.39
Can you tell us what happened last night you know when you went to work and such like...
R.
Erm. I was in the Cellar Bar. I know this chap, I didn't know him by name and yet I know his wte. They introduced themselves to me a few weeks ago when they used to come up. I believe they know my brother-in-law.
Q. 3.04
Who's your brother-in-law.....
R.
He's Willy THOMPSON....
Q.
Right.
R.
I got on alright with em, and late last night I believe prior to any incident, there's a television fell on one' of em as he was getting up there was no trouble, it was an accident, and that was that. Erm, shortly afterwards, there was an occasion where erm, whats his name. Tony is it...
Q.
Yeh, the lad that's dead. Did you know him as Tony....
R.
No.
Q.
No.
Q.
Do you know who we were referring to....
R.
Yeh. Erm, he was, I was stood talking to a girl. Hay ley GARRIGAN, and I see a lad throw his arms back, this is Tony, and he was face to face with another lad and he was by the expression on his face, I couldn't hear what he was saying, but they was having some sort of argument. I went over to him, I grabbed him by the throat and took him outside. Erm, I kept hold of his throat outside and told him that if he wanted to do anything he did it outside and not where I was working. He I let him go, he argued, he tried to get through the door. I hit him with the back of my hand....
Q. 4.33
Where did you hit him...
R.
On about the nose I think...
Q.
With the back of your hand...
R.
Back of my hand....
Q.
Back of your right hand....
R.
Yeh.
Q.
Yeh.
R-
Erm, and I think at that time there was a boy HAMMOND stood there. I don't know him personally I just know him by his name as HAMMOND. He's a doorman somewhere else I think, I'm not sure. I went back into the club.I was talking to Hayley GARRIGAN again. Erm, Karl SxxxxxxN cams in and said there's some trouble outside. I went outside and I saw that Tony was on the stairs trying to get back down the stairs. He seemed to be having some trouble with people on the stairs. I let him in through the door and tried to calm people down that was on the stairs. I shouted some sort of abuse at em. Erm, I think Tony was seeing Rod MOORE, then his mate, who I know him by as Squirrel, erm, was concerned about Tony. I said, I'm not. He thought I was going hit him. I said I'm not going to hit him. You know he's not doing nothing wrong. I even walked out the door with my arm around him, went up the stairs. Tony, er Squirrel still thought there was going to be trouble. We got into an argument. I grabbed him. I head butted him and I punched him and that was it....
Q. 5.53
Did he hit you at all. Squirrel, is that SEWELL....
R.
I don't know...
Q.
What does he look like. Squirrel....
R.
He's a stocky lad, dark hair....
Q.
Do you know if he's in here....
R.
I haven't seen him...
Q.
You don't know. I think. Do you remember what he was wearing...
R.
No, I can't remember.No.
R.
Dark hair, stocky I know that and taller than me, the other lad.
Q. 6.15
And this is Tony's mate...
Q.
Did he hit you, sorry, did he hit you...
R. ,
No.
Q.
Did he hit anybody. Squirrel...
R.
Not that I was aware of, no....
Q-
And what happened after that....
R.
Rod MOORE separated us, told me to calm down. I went downstairs back into the bar. He got me a drink. I was a bit wound up. I had a couple of mouthfuls of it. I said to him I was going to walk Hayley home and I started walking, I was across the Market Place with her and then I see another lad that was with them two earlier on. I asked him where Squirrel was. He said he'd gone home. I said where was that. He said Columbia Way, and then I just ran. I thought I was gonna run after him. Erm, I ran by Lloyds Bank, cause that was where the lad was when I spoke him near the cashpoint I think. I ran down the back of Lloyds Bank, erm towards the Lattice. There was a police car with Tony and there was a crowd of people there and I kept, er. The officer said something to me, I can't remember what it was, but I said I was looking for his mate. I carried on running and there was a police car with Rod MOORE in it I think. They stopped me. He said, where are you going. I said I'm going home. They said wait about. I said, no I'm going home and er carried on running, enn then I think maybe an officer must have got out the car, cause then there was somebody chasing me. A police car tried to stop me, I jumped a wall, hid behind a thing but I was tired, I'd been running about from the Market Place to which is near George Street where I live and I was panting a lot, so it obvious he could hear me behind a tree, so I just corns out...
Q. 8.21
Why did you run away and hide then...
R.
I was just thinking of going hone.....
Q.
You're saying that you only hit Tony once is that right...
R.
Tony.
Q.
Yes....
R.
I hit him with the back of my hand yes....
Q.
Just once...
R.
Yes....
Q. 8.37
Did he have any injury, did he bleed or anything...
R.
I don't believe he did. I went back in the club and then I shut the door on him I think, went back in the club...
Q. 8.47
When, when this, something happened downstairs. Did you hit him downstairs at all...
R.
I never, I never hit him, apart frcm when they took him outside...
Q.
Did you hit anybody downstairs at all that evening or you know through the period you were working down downstairs...
R.
Erm, not that I can remember. Only Squirrel on the stairs at the top of the stairs.....
Q. 9.07
I gather there's a camera somewhere where there is a monitor somewhere behind the bar....
R
Yeh.
Q.9.12
What, where does that actually show onto this camera...
R.
The bottom of the stairs...
Q
Which is as you're in, you come through the top don't you and you go down the stairs and it's just on the bottom on the stairs.
R.
It's outside the door pointing towards the stairs...
Q-
And how far up the stairs could it see...
R.
Not a great deal....
Q. 9.34
And when....
R.
I think if you stood at the bottom of the stairs that would catch your head, you know what I mean, so that projection...
Q.
Probably not mine, I've probably got all of mine. Yeh. Okay. So, you insist that you only hit Tony the once...
R.
Yes.
Q.
But you hit Squirrel. He reckons you head butted him a few times.... ,
R.
I remember head butting him and I punched him on the nose I think....
Q.
I see you've got a mark on your own forehead, how was that caused....
R.
That was when I head butted him....
Q.
Squirrel..,.
R.
Yes....
Q. 10.10
Who else was around when all this was happening....
R.
There was a lot of people....
Q-
Were there....
R.
Rod MOORE was there, cause he, I think he tried to stop me. Erm, there was loads of people I don't really know.
Q.
Can you think of some names...
Q.
Take your time Micky....
Q.
You appreciate the importance of this. As you know that lad is found and he's dead, round the back near the Lattice House. Just try and think who else was about....
R.
Oh Karl SxxxxxxN must have been there cause he came in and told me there was some trouble. The two HAMMONDS.....
Q. 10.49
That's Wayne and Jay yes....
R.
Yes,. I think they would have been there
Q.
Wayne's got the long hair and Jay's got the tattoo on his forehead hasn't he.....
R.
I don't know, I know em both as HAMMONDS. Erm, loads of people. I know there was a boy Ricky there, but I don't know his surname. He uses the Cellar Bar a lot. Erm, can't really remember who was there....
Q.11.18
See some people say after you, you'd hit Squirrel, you came down and you were sort of pretty hyped up, you seemed quite pleased with yourself, would that be the case...
R.
Not really. I went back into the bar. I want pleased with meself, I would just angry....
Q.
Wild. Do you tend to go a little bit over the top on occasions, do you think...
R
I tell you, I mean I don't know. You can ask anybody else, but this is what I'd say is a fair thing of roe. I generally give people the benefit of the doubt and they can do whatever they like as long as they're not violent. Do you know what I mean and I’ll stop them being violent and that's all. On this occasion....
Q. 11.59
So why did you head, head butt Squirrel then, what was he doing to make you want to do that....
R.
I don't know, there was something happened on the stairs. He just confronted me....
Q. 12.11
This, there must have been something that triggered you to get into a state like that Micky....
Q.
Well let's take who was at the top of the stairs. Was, we'll throw some names in. There was Karl was there, which is Karl SxxxxxxN was there...
R.
SxxxxxxN, yes...
Q.
Was Bobby there. Bobby HILLS, was he there, what about....
R.
I didn't see Bobby HILLS.....
Q.
Paul FELLOWS...
R.
No...
Q.
He wasn't there or you don't know him.....
R
I didn't see, I know Paul FELLOWS, I didn't see him....
Q.
Paul is it, Paul FELLOWS.
R.
Oh Paul FELLOWS, yes, sorry he might have been there....
Q. 12.42.
Yeh. What does he look like, Paul....
R.
He's stocky, white bloke, dark hair, shaved on the
sides. He'd have been with Karl, yeh....
Q.
Is he a Lynn lad...
R.
Yeh.
Q.
Has he got a nickname at all...
R.
Fez.
Q.
Fez, as in the hat fez.
R.
Yes.
Q-
Is that because of his hair is it,....
R.
I don't know (inaudible)
Q.1300
Who was, who was the girl that fell or who was pushed down the stairs...
R.
That was before I got out there. I remember someone saying...
Q.
Do you know who it was by the way.
R.
No.
Q.
No.
R.
No. I remember somebody saying about that now you mention it, but that
was before I got out there.....
Q. 13.15
Sort of how long before....
R.
I think. I'm not sure if she was getting led away by somebody as I come to the downstairs door.
Q. 1321
So that was immediately before you go out there then....
R.
Yeh I'd say....
Q.
And you've not idea who that was....
R.
No.

Q-
Did you see her or....
R.
I remember a girl going up the stairs, whether that was the girl that got knocked down. I remember somebody saying about that....
Q.
But you've no idea who that was.
R.
No.....
Q.
So who would know who that was when he was at the top of the stairs, that would know who that was do you think. Would Karl know who it was....
R.
I don't know. I mean there was a lot of people there, maybe they'd be able to tell you who else was there, I don't know.....
Q.13.54
Had Karl been inside the Cellar Bar..
R.
Yeh.
Q.
Do you know what point he left...
R.
No...
Q.
So this incident had happened with you. Squirrel and Tony being kicked out right, after you had hit Squirrel where was Tony.....
R.
I don't know....
Q.
And the minute you had hit Squirrel did you come straight downstairs or did you hang about up the top...
R.
That happened downstairs and I went straight back inside...
Q.
What happened downstairs....
R.
When I took Squirrel out by, not Squirrel, Tony out by the throat,...
Q.
Yes....
R.
I hit him with the back of my hand, there was one of the HAMMONDS there then, I remember that, then I went back inside....
Q.
Okay and after you hit Squirrel, did you come straight back downstairs...
R.
Within a matter of a minute at the most I was out there..
Q. 14.46
And did you see Squirrel again after that time....
R.
No.
Q.
Did you see Tony again after that time....
R.
No.
Q.
Other than the obvious...
R.
No. He was above us. He was sort of......
Q.
Yeh but you did see him once more after that time didn't you when you saw him laying on the ground....
R.
Yeh, yeh.
Q.
Did you see him at any time since you caning back into the bar having hit Squirrel and when you saw him laying on the path....
R.
No.
Q. 15.14
There's soms suggestion that you did in fact head butt, er Tony....
R.
No I never....
Q.
Are you sure.... ^
R.
Yeh...
Q.
Did you cause him any injuries....
R.
No. I tell you I hit him with the back of my hand and like I said earlier I knew the lads, I was a bit pissed off that they had played up in there and that was it....
Q.
So the playing up, was that purely that this Tony I take it is a bit of a loud chap is he.....
R.
Yes, but he's alright...
Q.
Yes. And you think he was squaring up to somebody or....
R.
Yeh he was....
Q. 15.46
Do you know any idea who that was...
R.
No, he had his back to me...
Q.
Can you remember what he was wearing or anything about him. Who he was with....
R
I know he was taller than Tony I would say. Erm, brown hair, but I didn't actually see him I don't think....
Q. 16.01.
You don't know who he was...
R.
No.
Q.
Did you see him after Tony was ejected.....
R.
I tell you this happened so fast....
Q.
Had you had much to drink...
R.
No....
Q.
No. Do you normally drink much when you're working....
R.
We're not allowed to....
Q.
No, but I know damn well, I've been there when the boys have had a drink, not necessarily there but other, other places and you do have a drink don't you....
R.
You're allowed a couple of pints yes...
Q.
But you hadn't had a great deal to drink. Are you certain...
R.
Yeh.....
We're just going through it again Mick, I know it's a bit tiresome. How many times do you think you head butted Squirrel...
R.
I don't know. I thought just the once and I remember hitting him once..
Q. 16.52
You hit him once, did he hit you at all....
R.
I don't know, I don't think so...
Q.
Did you see him hit anyone....
R.
No....
Q.
When you got him by the, I think you got him by the throat didn't you and pushed him up the, where was he half way down the stairs or bottom of the stairs or up the top.....
R.
That was near the top of the stairs I think....
Q.
You got him by the throat, then you pushed him up the stairs and then head butted him. Now did he hit the ground at all. Did you drag him' along.
R.
No.
Q.
How would he have got injuries to his hand, either of his hands...
R.
He had an injury to his hand early on in the evening...
Q.
Did he....
R.
Yes. He came up to me, I don't smoke thanks. He came up and apparently he'd had some sort of taddoo with a tall blond haired lad with a parting in the middle. Said he'd hit him in the eye and he'd done his hand in.
He cone up to us on the door and asked that and I went round looking for him but there was nobody of that description.
Q. 17.50
When was that then...
R.
That was earlier on....
Q.
And where did he have this fight...
R.
I don't say a fight. I'll tell you who he asked about it. He came to me on the door and said about it...
Q.
When was.this roughly....
R.
This would have been about half eleven, twelve o'clock. I know it was earlier, say an hour really than this...
Q.
Was that roughly, when, let me try and think, that would have. He'd been in there before then hadn't he. He must have gone out or something....
R.
Squirrel....
Q.
Yeh...
R.
No, he'd been in all night...
Q.
Yeh, but who had the injuries to the hand...
R.
Squirrel...
Q.
Yeh. So where did he have this.....
R.
This happened in the toilets....
Q.
Oh I see....
R.
And I'll tell, and then when I went looking for him and he didn't know who he was, he said that the boy FOUNTAIN would know who it was. I'm sure he asked Andy FOUNTAIN....
Q. 18.47
Andy......
R.
Andy FOUNTAIN Chips his name is. He asked him who he was. I think it was him he asked and he didn't know or he said he'd gone or something....
Q.
So Squirrel had a fight, he told you in the toilets in the Cellar Bar...
F.
Something had happened, I don't know if it was a fight or he said he'd been hit. He kept asking me if he had a black eye. He said he'd been hit in the eye and his hand was swollen...
Q. 19.13
Did he show you the hand...
R.
Yeh....
Q.
And what injuries did you see to that hand....
R.
That was swollen...
Q.
It was swollen then....
R.
Yeh...
Q.
That's a definite is it....
R.
Yeh, cause I squeezed it....
Q.
Yeh.. You shook hands with him and hurt him....
R.
Well you know he come up and said you know and I just sort of, but like I say he did ask, I think it was Andy FOUNTAIN or one of that, one of them, if he, he said he'd knew who it was.....
Q.
Andy would know who it was....
R.
Yes.
Q.
He had the fight with...
R.
Yeh....
Q.
Do you know what it was over...
R.
No.....
Q.
Karl was there wasn't he, Karl SxxxxxxN....
R.
Karl SxxxxxxN yes....
Q. 19.56
Do you know his ex-girlfriend, do you know Joanne...
R.
Yes....
Q.
Was Joanne there last night....
R.
I didn't see her. Em, I see her earlier on yes sorry she was there but
I didn't see her near the end....
Q.
Do you know where Joanne lives...
R.
I've got an idea.
Q.
Roughly.
R.
If she's, is she living with her parents...
Q-
I don't honestly know....
R.
I think she lives down Methuen Avenue....
Q.
Does she.... '
R.
Somewhere Off Wootton Road....
Q.
Do you know the name. Her other name.....
R-
Em. I'll think of it, I've heard it before, erm, not off the
top of me head, but if I heard it I'd know it.
Q. 20.40
She was in there last night. So we get the right one, does she work at the Tudor Rose....
R.
I don't know....
Q.
The bar maid....
R-
I think she works at Decorative Sleeves during the day. She's a blonde girl.....
Q. 20.54
I don't know I haven't seen her. But she, there was a girl called Joanne there who works as a bar maid at the Tudor Rose, which I think is the ex-girlfriend of Karl is it......
R.
That's right, yeah, they used to live together....
Q.
Yeah.
R.
Yeah...
Q.
Now she was down there with two blokes, do you remember seeing them...
R.
I only briefly, I only briefly saw them when I was behind the bar.....
Q. 21.16
Yeah, now they left somewhere after you'd come down with the blood on you, you and Rod had come down with the blood. They left...
R.
Yeah.
Q.
Then they went up onto the Market Place, then those two lads that she was with were attacked as well, but that was by, we believe by some one who's already been msntioned, we know who did that. Did you hear anything about that...
R.
No.....
Q.
You obviously didn't see them get into any argument with anybody, that's what I was looking for, whether there was another argument....
R.
I'll tell you what I say on the stairs there was a lot of people there and it was.....
Q.
We need to know who that girl was that fell was either fell or was pushed down the. stairs. Very important.
Q.
Any idea who would know that.
R.
No. All you can do is ask the people that were there...
Q.
Ask the people that were there, that's right...
Q.
Is there anyone else that you can think of who was outside when you were having the scuffle with Squirrel or even with GOREMAN. Anyone that you can think of who you haven't mentioned...
R.
No.
Q. 22.45
It's quite important we know who's at the top of the stairs, you understand that because obviously, if you didn't do it, then from what you're saying when you went downstairs, had a couple of sips of beer, then what was the length of time do you think having come downstairs, got your pint drunk or poured out, had a couple of sips and then decided to go after Squirrel, I mean...
R.
A matter of minutes.....
Q.
Well yeah but matter could be anything.....
R.
Not five minutes.
Q.
Not as long as five minutes....
R.
No, no....
Q. 23.14
What more likely....
R.
A couple of minutes, I had a couple of drinks. Rod told me to calm down I think. He paid me my money and that was it. I said, I think I said to
Hayley that I'd either walk her hems or get her a taxi or something...
Q.
Yeah. Hayley...
R.
GARRIGAN..
Q.
And where does Hayley live...
R.
Em, Swiss Terrace, No. 4. Swiss cottage or whatever it is
Q.
Yes.
R.
Yeah, off Tennyson Avenue...
Q.
So you walked with Hayley up Paige Stair Lane, onto the Tuesday Market
Place and where were you walking, what direction across the Market Place..
R.
Towards Lloyds Bank...
Q.
So towards the beginning of the High Street diagonally across the Tuesday
Market Place. Yes...
R.
Yeah...
Q. 23.58
Now how far across there was it when you saw Karl, not Karl, you saw a lad called Robert didn't you. Robert WHITE...
R.
I don' t know his name..
Q.
Was he walking with anybody...
R.
By himself as I remember....
Q.
Was he...
R.
I think he was, yeah, if that's Squirrel's mate was it...
Q.
Well there was a lad that was Squirrel and what did you say to him.
R.
I asked him where Squirrel was.
Q.
And what did he say...
R.
He said he'd gone home. I asked him where hone was and he said somewhere off Columbia Way, I can't remember where. I thought if I run I'll catch him, before he even gel-s to Columbia Way...
Q.
And what were you going to do if you caught him...
R.
I don't know.
Q
Have another go I suppose
R.
Probably...
Q.
Yes. But what about Tony, were you going to have a go at Tony if you'd found him...

R.
No, no. I even ran past him when he was laid dawn. I mean I don't know what had happened to him...
Q. 24.48
But when you went past him, how many, were there a lot of people there when you reached him...
R.
Yeah, there was a crowd round him you know, maybe four or five people and the police car...
Q.
The police car was already there...
R.
Yeah...
Q.
And is that the first time you saw Tony since he left the Cellar Bar...
R.
Yeah..
Q.
Did you recognise any of the men or the group (inaudible) policeman there..
R.
Yeah.
Q.
Did you recognise any of the group around there.
R.
No.
Q.
I've just burnt my finger. Okay so you got, then you were asked to stop, you said no sod it I'm going home and you legged it...
R.
Yes..
Q.
And that is right is it...
R.
When I was asked to stop the first time, when the police car that was with
Tony, I said something about I'm going to see his mate or something, then when Rod, I think Rod turned up in a police car, then said to them I was going to go home. The police officer must have known me cause he spoke to me by my first name. I didn't really stop to see who it was...
Q. 26.00
What was the atmosphere like when you were, I mean you were having this fight with Squirrel, right and you told us about what happened to Tony, what was the atmosphere like with regards to the other members of the public that are outside that Cellar Bar door. Did you take any notice...
R.
All I remember was when I first came, when I came out Karl SQMERTON had a word with me. Tony was on the stairs trying to get down and it looked like he'd been hit. He come in the club, I didn't stop him getting in because from what I saw he was getting hit, so then I stayed on the door and had a word with the people that were on the stairs, I can't remember who they were and then by then Squirrel had come out. He thought I was going to hit Tony. I left with my arm round Tony.I walked up the stairs with him. Squirrel kept going on about not hitting him, then...
Q. 27.02
Is it right you said something like don't tell me how to do my job or something like that...
R.
Yeah. That's when I grabbed hold of him.
Q.
You say you thought Tony was being hit, who was hitting Tony...
R.
I don't know. There was a lot of people on the stairs and it looked like he was trying to get down through em to stop getting hit...
Q.
Does it look as though that he'd upset someone or was it ...
R.
All I know is Karl SQMERTQN come in and said something about there was trouble outside with the lad that I'd thrown out...
Q.
You don't know what caused that trouble...
R.
No....

Q.
It would be nice to know who else was on them stairs. Because you say you thought Tony was being hit by somebody there...
R.
Yeah.
Q. 27.47
Can you think god do try, who was at the top of those stairs who could have hit him.
R.
I tell you the stairs were packed, there was loads of people there and somebody must have seen what was going on...
Q.
This is the hardship, because if you don't know who was there, what chance have we got...
R.
Honestly for me, that was so quickly happening, you just can't sort of take notes of names and that but I am sure that boy Ricky, he uses the snooker club a lot, I don't know his surname...
Q.
Ricky. How old a lad...
R.
In his early twenties....
Q.
Ricky.
R.
Yes...
Q.
And he...
R.
I think he was there abouts cause I see him....
Q.
Any idea where he's from...
R.
He' s from Lynn....
Q. 28.32
So we've got Ricky...
R.
I mean the people that were there would know who was on the stairs. I sort of just got there, as I say Squirrel come by me....
Q.
There was Paul you say, Paul FELLCWS was there....
R.
I think so yeah...
Q.
So all we've got really is Ricky, Karl SxxxxxxN, Paul FELLCWS...
R.
I mean there's a lot of girls and that there as well you know.
Q.
Who was there...
R.
I don't know, but as it was people were leaving, that was going out time sort of thing...
Q.
But why do you think somebody was hitting Tony, has anybody said...
R.
It just looked like he was getting hit. You know what I mean, there was a lot of movement on the stairs sort of coining down and him in the front...
Q. 29.12
He was sort as if backing off...
R.
He was coming down the stairs and there was a lot of people on the stairs coming down as well...
Q.
What after him. Was that the impression you got...
R.
That was the impression I got...
Q.
They were chasing him rather than just And that was why he come in the door and I didn't stop him coming in the door.
Q.
Have there been any other problems with Tony down the Cellar Bar that you know of any other instances with either him or Squirrel...
R.
Ages ago, well ages, I saw weeks ago, there was someat where somebody said that Squirrel or somebody was going hit them or whatever or hit one of their mates...
Q.
Do you know who that was or anything...
R.
No.
Q. 29.47.
But Squirrel you reckon, sorry...
R.
See these lads and I grabbed Squirrel then and told him that there wouldn't be no fighting if I was working. I mean these. Squirrel and
Tony, I mean they used to speak to me every week, you know, only cause they know Willy THOMPSON and you know I just, they weren't my mates but
you know...
Q.
They're people you speak to...
R.
Yeah. I mean I'd sort of spend ten minutes chatting to them maybe of an evening, but like I say the tele got smashed, they weren't nobody thrown out or anything, he said it was an accident....
Q.
Well everybody says that, nobody's arguing....
R.
You know and that was that and thats how it was tret. Its not as if there was anything between anybody sort of.....
Q. 30.24
What does Ricky look like....
R.
He's a short stocky lad, he's got a couple of teeth missing I think...
Q.
What front teeth...
R.
Yeah. He used to go out with Donna PURPLE, so she'll know, if you know Donna PURPLE...
Q.
Where's she from...
R.
From King's Lynn...
Hayley GARRIGAN will tell you Ricky's name I think, but as I say he was there.
Q.
Hayley...
R.
GARRIGAN....
Q.
Is it GARRAGAN.
R.
IGAN.
Q.
IGAN. Where does she live are you saying. Swiss Terrace.
R.
Yeah, number 4, near the Mailings...
Q.
So she'll know who Ricky is will she.-...
R.
Yeah, she'll probably be able to tell you if anybody else was there I don't know. She wasn't actually out on the door, you know what I mean. I was talking to her and I left her to go outside, but whether she see anybody about I know don't.
Q. 31.24
So we really need to speak to Hay ley. Is she on the 'phone. Do you know her number off the top of you head....
R.
760349.
Q.
So we can speak to Hayley and she'll be no problem, she'll...
R.
She knows who Ricky is...
Q.
So to get it right, what you're saying basically is that because Tony was squaring up to somebody else who you don't know, why did you decide to eject Tony and not the other feller...
R.
I just see him, he was the one that. I don't know if he dropped a glass or something but I remember him. Something drew me to the way, if it was a glass or something, he had his fist back like that and he was, and you could see he was like shouting, but the bloke was stood right next to him.. I couldn't see what the other bloke was doing, he just had his back to me, so I just grabbed Tony...
Q. 32.14
How many people were in the club at that stage...
R.
Not very many really...
Q
Do you remember who was downstairs at that time....
R.
D.J. Bar staff, erm.
Q.
Not many...
R.
No, there weren't that many people. I was talking to Hayley GARRIGAN near the, where the D.J. was and that was sort of emptying...
Q.
Does Hayley work do you know....
R.
Yes she works in the hospital...
Q.
What shift work...
R.
No, part-time, in the Path Lab sort of thing....
Q.
So she's not likely to be at work this evening is she....
R.
No.
Q.
And then, so you hit Tony just the once with the back of your hand because he was being lippy basically...
R.
Yes....
Q.
Yes, and then you came back downstairs and that was it....
R.
That was at the bottom of the stairs...
Q.
That was at the bottom of the stairs, that was the end...
R.
That was outside the door...
Q. 33.10
He was kicked out yes...
R.
Yes.
Q.
Then he, the next thing you know he is coming back down, you let him in cause you got the impression that other people are chasing him and having a go at him. You then put your arm round him and take him back out, its then...
R-
I tell you what I had my arm on his shoulder like that and we just walked up...
Q.
And then you have Squirrel giving you a bit of verbal thinking you're picking on his mate...
R.
Yes, yes...
Q.
And you end up with a row with him and you end up head butting him and...
R-
Yeah...
Q.
Now you say that Squirrel had a fight or he told you that he had a fight
earlier on. Did he have any facial marks at all that you saw....
R.
Well he kept saying have I got a black eye, so I don't know....
Q. 33.45
Did he have any cuts or anything that you could see....
R.
I did't see any. No.
Q.
Cause I'm going to tell you now he has got an injury over his right eye, I think there are four or five stitches in there....

R.
That was probably me...
Q.
Yeah, well I think if there were none...
R.
There weren't any earlier. All I know is he said he thought he had a black eye and his hand was swollen...
Q.
But he never really had a go at you at all. He never had a go...
R.
No.
Q.
He didn't hit you....
R.
No.
Q. 34.11
Cause I mean there's no doubt I mean both his hands
are swollen... .
R.
Yeah...
Q.
Okay. Well that's it for now. Is there anything you wanted to say.
Anything you wanted to say....
Q.
No, I mean there's going to be probably something else to ask Micky later on but at the moment I' think we've covered all we want to cover.
Q.
Okay. Anything else. Do you want to make a written statement...
R
No, you've got everything as I remember it...
Q.
Okay, I'll serve you with the notice as explained at the beginning of the tape. Do you want that Mr. CHARLTON...
R,.
I'll take that.

Q. 34.43
The time is now, can you get up their Jackie and turn that off.
Q.
Yes, get it right...
Q.
Is five fortyone and we'll terminate the interview.

Mandy Groom Statement

The following statement is from a barmaid at the club. It doesn't paint me in a very good light. This statement was taken before any of the actual witness statements. Remember she stayed behind at the club for hours waiting to give this statement chatting to other staff members. I beleive the Police thought they already had their man and this just fuelled that belief. I want to touch on a couple of things raised by her. She mentions the amount I had to drink that evening and said she thought I was drunk and that I had blood shot eyes due to drugs. I will at a later stage show the blood test results that were taken on my arrest. Both proved NEGATIVE. I emphasise that because I think its important. Her thoughts should not have been allowed to come into it. She should of stuck to what she knew. I explained in my Police interviews , again I will post them later that I was renovating an old house and anyone who has ever repaced old lathe and plaster ceilings will appreciate the amount of shit that gets in your eyes. Anyway I wasn't on drugs that night. Fortunately for me I had stopped taking drugs on the November before. So to the amount of drinks she thought I had that night. Again I explained it to the Police in my interviews that as I used to get free drinks when I worked there, I used to get my mates drinks without telling the barstaff who they where for. Whenever I see Mandy Groom now I think you stupid cow. It used to be easy for me to blame people for what happened and she was one of them but now I don't give it any thought.
So to her statement...

DATED: 020391 MANDY GROOM (SIGNED)

I am Mandy Julie GROOM, and I live at the address stated overleaf. I am employed on a part time basis at the Cellar Bar, Page Stair Lane, Tuesday Market Place, Kings Lynn. I normally work on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings from 3.00pm until we finish which is normally about 1.30am the following morning. I have worked there for the last four months. On Friday 1st March 1991 I arrived for work at about 8.00pm, having got a lift from one of the other barmaids, Emma REGISTER, in her car an Austin Metro. The car was parked in Page Stair Lane, outside Patrick and Thompsons gate The Cellar Bar normally has bouncers on the door on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings. On the evening in question, the Friday evening there were two bouncers on the door until 10.30pm, Micky TEAL and another man I just know as lan. After 10.30pm they were joined by another bouncer, Rod M00RE. There is a pool of different men who act as bouncers I never know who is actually going to be working at the bar until they arrive. Sometime between 12.15am and 12.30am the following morning I was behind the bar when I heard the sound of glasses smashing in the middle of the hall. At this the hall in the main room in the Cellar bar is still full, with probably over 100 customers in some of whom are still trying to order drinks. When I heard the noise I looked up and saw Micky TEAL with his hands around the neck of one of the customers. I would describe this customer as follows; over 6 ft tall, medium build with short blonde hair. I did not recognize this man and in fact this was the first time I had noticed him, in the premises. I cannot remember what he was wearing. I then saw Micky TEAL march this man to the door, whilst still holding his hands around the man’s neck. He did this quite fast, pushing other customers out of the way. Rod MOORE had been standing by the side of Micky TEAL and he also walked along side him, but he didn't have hold of the man in any way. They all went through the door into the entrance hall where there is a small table which normally has a till on top of it. They closed the double doors behind them and so I could not see what Happened inside the entrance hall. Other than Micky TEAL, Rod MOORE and the man I have described I did not see anyone else go into the entrance hall. On the bar is a television screen for a remote camera which is situated on the steps which lead to the outside entrance of the club. This enables us to see the customers outside the club, before we let them in. I looked at the television screen and saw the outside doors to the entrance hall also being closed. All three men stayed inside the entrance hall for about one to two minutes. I could hear the sound of raised voices, inside the entrance hall as if an argument was taking place, though I was unable to near what was being said, or who was saying what. After this short time I then saw the man with the blond hair standing in the middle of the stairs outside the club. I saw this again on the remote camera. I had not seen him walk out, but I could see he was on his own. Micky TEAL and Rod MOORE then walked back into the main hall, where I could see them from the bar I don't know where Rod. went to, but Micky stood at the end of the bar Micky then started to speak to a man with dark hair, who was wearing a burgundy coloured rugby shirt. I did not know this man and the first time I remembered seeing him was when Micky TEAL started to talk to him I then saw the man walk outside with Micky TEAL who had been joined by Rod MOORE. They were also followed by a group of about ten other customers. I than followed them myself to see what was happening. I had to crawl underneath the hatch in the bar to get out. As the men were going through the door I heard a girl scream something like "Rod you don't have to go out there, it doesn’t take two". I followed the group outside and when I got about half way up the stairs I could see Micky TEAL holding the man with dark hair around the throat with both hands. I heard him say to him something like, "You don't tell me what to fucking do. I just do what I fucking want to do". I then saw Micky TEAL head-butt the man whilst he was still holding him around, the neck. he did this just once. At this time Rod MOORE was standing by the side of Micky, and the other people who had followed them out were standing behind the man I saw Micky TEAL head butt the man I immediately ran back down the stairs and back into the club when I got back inside the club I saw that Paul, the manager was on the telephone. I shouted at him to ring the police. I then went back behind the bar and carried on with my work. Sometime later, I am not sure how long; I saw Micky TEAL and Rod MOORE walk back into the premises. Both men were wearing black trousers and Rod was wearing a white shirt, whilst Micky was wearing a white shirt with a stripe in it. Both men were covered in blood. Micky had blood running down his face from his forehead and his shirt was also covered in blood. Rod had no blood on his face, but his shirt also had blood on it, but less than on Mickys shirt. Both men ordered a pint of lager from Emma the other barmaid, which they were given. At this time there were about ten customers left in the club, and lan the other bouncer was still trying to get than to leave, Micky and Rod were both standing at the bar drinking their lager. I do not know what they were talking about but I heard Rod telling Micky to Calm down and leave it alone I can't remember if they finished their drinks or not, but then Micky got up and walked out of the club. Rod MOORE followed him. About 5 minutes later Rod returned, but this time he was on his own. Rod told me to get him another drink, but I refused, so Emma got him one. Rod had just had a mouthful of his drink when the police arrived and took Rod away with them. Throughout the evening Micky TEAL had been drinking at the bar. He was drinking pints of lager from about 8.30pm until about 10.30pm when Rod MOORE arrived. He then started to drink double Southern Comforts, together with bottles of Sol lager. Rod MOORE was drinking vodka and lemonade together with bottles of Sol lager. Both men had drunk a fair quantity of alcohol, Micky TEAL more so. I am unable to say whether Micky TEAL was drunk by the end of the evening because he always gives the impression of being under the influence of drink, as he has blood-shot eyes and this is normally the way I can tell whether a person is drunk or not, but by the sheer quantity he had drunk I think he must have been drunk. I think Micky may have been under the influence of drugs as well as the alcohol though I have never seen him taking any drugs. From about 10.30pm Micky seemed very aggressive towards the customers, as if he was looking for a fight. Micky was even aggressive towards Emma, the other barmaid. When he had come back into the Cellar Bar with blood on his face Emma had offered him some ice to put on his injuries, which he took, but he told her to "Fuck off". Rod on the other hand seemed calmer than Micky and whilst he was on the premises he did not have as much to drink as Micky. At some point during the evening I heard a crashing sound from the main hall area, and shortly afterwards someone brought a television set into the kitchen area, which is next door to the bar. I did not see what had happened to e television. I am unable to say whether this was before or after the incident with the blond haired man, in the entrance hall. I would also state that the other bouncer lan did not drink any alcohol to my knowledge, and only drank orange juice and lemonade. He took no part in either the incident with the blonde haired man, or the one involving the man with the dark hair wearing the rugby shirt. I remained sober throughout the evening, having only been drinking lime and soda.

My Statement

This is a statement I made to my Solicitor. I didn't make one to the Police although I intend to scan all my taped interviews. One reason I didn't make a statement was although I went on 8 I.D. parades and wasn't picked out on any, remarks by Police Inspector colin langham-fitt,in the toilets soon after 1 of the parades informing me I would be getting charged with the murder regardless of the outcome of the parades suggested to me the Police even at that early stage in the investigation had already made up their minds.

I MICHAEL ANDREW TEAL state as follows:-

Until the night of the incident concerned I have worked as a doorman at the Cellar Club since about November last year. My regular nights of work was Friday night and Saturday. I would commence work about 8.30 pm and work through until closing time at 1 a.m. There are a number of other staff involved in connection with the club Mr. Neil Williamson is the manager of the club. There are a number of doormen being myself. Rod Moore who is also charged, lan Diggins. Myself Rod Moore and lan Diggins were on duty on the night in question. There are 3 other doormen namely Rory. I do not know Rory's second name. He was not working on the night in question but he arrived at the vicinity of the club premises shortly before closing time and just as I was leaving Mr. Kevin Oakes works as a doorman at the club. He was not on duty that night nor, so far as I am aware, was he present at the club. There is another doorman of the name of John. I do not know his second name. He has not worked on the door for a week or two. There are a number of other staff being mainly bar staff. Miss Donna Sizeland who is Neil Williamson's girlfriend works on the bar. On this night she arrived late I think about 11 ish. There is a person called Paul who is the bar manager. There are then two barmaids Emma and Mandy. As far as I am aware Donna, Paul Emma and Mandy were all present on the night in question. In addition there is a person called Joanne who sometimes helps out and a young man whose name I do not know but who is aged in his twenties. On the night in question there was also present the disc jockey Mr. Steve Burt (or Burke) and a friend of his. There may also have been someone collecting glasses. I arrived at work at approximately 8.30p.m. As is usual the club did not get busy until about 10.30 p.m. At some stage I cannot be precise when Mr Sewell (who until that time I had known as squirrel) told me that there had been some trouble between himself and others in the toilet area of the club. I remember this specifically as he was asking me whether he had a black eye. I know Mr. Sewell as he frequently attended the club. Likewise I know Tony German as being a regular visitor to the club. I would often chat to them. With the exception of Sewell mentioning to me that there had been an incident of some sort in the toilet area I was not aware of any particular trouble in the club that night until the various incidents at about closing time. For most of the evening I was in the club area itself and not actually on duty at the door. The bar to the premises shuts at about 1 am shortly prior to closing a television screen was broken. This incident involved Sewell but I understand it was an accident and there was no trouble caused. However shortly prior to closing time at around 1 a.m. while I was standing in the club area with Hayley Garrigan near the dee-jay's table I noticed Tony Gorman facing up to another. The other person had his back to me and at that time I did not know who it was. Since that time I have learned that the other person was Tony Crown. However I could see that Gorman was behaving aggressively. He was standing up to the other person with his arms straight and fists clenched and appeared to be in an aggressive mood and was perhaps shouting at the other. I immediately intervened as I feared there might be some sort of trouble. Although I had not been aware of Gorman being involved in any earlier trouble I had been told I think by Ian Diggins previously that both Gorman and Sewell had been playing up in some way or another. It was for that reason that I was worried about Gorman being aggressive. As far as I can remember the precise time must have been about 1.10. or thereabouts. The bar was shut and many people had left. There was some people still around in particular I recall being with Hayley Garrigan near the dee-jay who was also present. I believe Karl Somerton may also have been present. He certainly had been present with me earlier as I had spoken to him earlier. In any event upon seeing Gorman behaving aggressively I moved over to them. They were not far away standing near a pillar. I immediately put both my hands to his neck and pulled him out towards the door. I cannot remember who was nearby but I remember passing others as I took him out. As soon as we reached the outside I let go of him in the small yard area at the bottom of the stairs. At this stage he was shouting and abusive. As a result of his continued abuse and shouting and apparent temper I hit him once with the back of my right hand. So far as I can remember I would have hit him round about the mouth area. There was no blood nor did he fall down or appear stunned. I say that it was not a hard blow. After I had put him out I then shut the door and returned to the interior of the club. So far as I can remember I would say that Wayne Hammond may have seen Gorman being put out by me. I think he was hanging about outside perhaps with J Hammond. There were certainly others about in that general area outside. Upon my returning to the club I went back to continue speaking to Hayley who had remained near the dee-jay. I don't think either the dee-jay or Hayley would have been aware of what Gorman had done. Perhaps a couple of minutes later Karl Somerton approached me from the opposite end of the club (towards the doors). He indicated to me that there was some trouble with Gorman outside. I immediately walked over to the foyer area. So far as I know Karl followed behind. There was still a good few people around. I cannot remember in the foyer area whether there were other people in the foyer or not but I went straight through the foyer to the small yard area. I looked up to the stairway and noted that the area seemed to be fairly well packed with people. I cannot remember all their identities. I do remember however that Paul Fellowes was near the bottom of the stairs Gorman was also near the bottom of the stairs and was coming down quickly towards me. I gained the impression that he was being chased by others but I cannot remember by whom. Gorman came past me. I let him by. I don't know whether he went back into the foyer or just stayed near the door. I remember him talking however to Rod Moore. In the meantime I was telling people to leave. I mean I was telling the people on the stairs and loitering nearby to leave. The problem had been that some were trying apparently to get up the stairs to leave and some others seemed to be trying to get back down the stairs. My intervention seemed to quieten them down. At this stage I was very near the door with both Gorman and Rod Moore. It was at this stage that Sewell appeared again on the scene. I do not recall precisely from where. At this stage there was no mention of the incident on the stairs or any earlier incident. As far as Gorman was concerned I told him to go and ushered him out towards the stairs by putting my arm round him. I was in no way violent towards him at this stage but was simply showing him the door. I led him upstairs. Sewell was nearby I think behind me. I gained the impression that Sewell was worried that his friend might be about to be hit. I am not sure whether he was indicating that he was about to be hit by others or whether he was worried that I was to hit him. In any event I said to Sewell and Gorman that no-one was going to hit him. I had however thought that he meant that others at first but I presume now that he thought I was going to hit Gorman. Gorman then left and I next noticed Sewell near the top of the stairs. He was continuing to argue with me and we had an exchange of words about how I carried out my job. I felt that Sewell was being insulting and abusive. I grabbed him by the neck with both hands and shouted at him not to tell me how to do my job. I recall Rod Moore being nearby and telling me to let go I recall others being about at that time but I cannot recall their precise identities. I say that it was only at that stage that I was anything other than levelheaded. I admit however that I head butted Sewell at that stage and punched him. I only head butted him once and punched him only once. He did not hit me back. It is true to say that there was quite a lot of blood caused but I thought at the time that all that blood was my own. I do not know where Sewell went from then. As far as I was concerned I was bleeding profusely from a cut to my forehead and the blood was pouring down my face into my mouth and onto my shirt. I went downstairs with Rod Moore and we went back into the club area. Although I do not know where Sewell went he did not come back into the club. I went back into the bar area with Rod Moore. Hayley was still there and it is true to say that she was upset looking at the state of me. There were both Hayley and Rod in the bar area at that time and other people. Rod Moore got me a bottle of beer and I took a few sips from that beer. I also wiped my face to clear the blood although I cannot remember what I used to wipe the blood off my face. I also received my £30 payment from Rod. I do not know where he obtained the money from. I would guess that it was no more than 5 minutes before I then left the Club. I left the premises with Hayley. It is right to say that Rod Moore had wanted me to stay for a while. In retrospect I think that he had probably wanted me to calm down. At that stage I had no idea or intention of going after Sewell or anyone else. I certainly had no intention of going after Gorman as I had no reason to. As I went upstairs I left the club and walked along Page Stair Lane towards the market place. As I was leaving I saw the other doorman known as Rory walking towards the club area. We exchanged greetings but did not have a proper conversation. I believe that Rod Moore was following me a little way down the road and was speaking to me and indicating to me that I should not go after Sewell. It was perhaps at that stage that the thought of looking for Sewell crossed my mind. In any event I continued to walk with Hayley diagonally across the market place in the direction of Lloyds Bank. I was intending either to walk Hayley home, or find her a taxi or go in a taxi with her. She lives in the Tennyson Avenue area and this was a logical direction to walk in. At some stage I noticed someone called White who I knew to be another friend of Gorman and Sewell. At that stage he was in the vicinity of Lloyds Bank. I do not recall exactly when I first noticed him or whereabouts I was at that time. However I went over to him. He was still in the vicinity of Lloyds Bank at that time. I asked White where squirrel was. He said words to the effect that Squirrel had gone home. I asked him where squirrel's home was and he indicated Columbia Way. I therefore decided to see if I could catch up with squirrel before he reached home I had no thoughts at this stage of Gorman. I then decided to run down Surrey Street, turn left along Chapel Street towards the Lattice Barn thinking that this was the quickest way towards the Columbia Way direction and that I might be able to catch up squirrel. I cannot remember any particular words with Hayley but I believe she tried to discourage me from leaving. I was not aware at that stage of Rod Moore following me. As I turned the corner into Chapel Street I noticed a number of people in a crowd and a police officer standing near the Council Offices. I shortly became aware that someone was on the ground. As I approached nearer I was aware that it was Gorman as I recognized his colourful rugby style shirt. I did not stop or enquire about him nor did I know at that stage that he had been severely injured. I did not notice any blood. I had certainly not seen him until that time since ushering him out of the club. I remember exchanging word with I think the police officer saying that I was not interested in Gorman but was looking for Sewell and I ran off. Still at this stage I was not aware that Rod was running after me. I continued running along Chapel Street past the church in the direction of the Trimoco Garage. I remember a police car pulling up behind me and asking me to stop. I remember seeing Rod Moore sat in that police car. This was the first time I had actually noticed Rod's presence since walking down Paige Stair Lane. I ran off past the garage and in the direction of The Retreat public house. I was aware that at some stage I was being chased and at some stage a police car attempted to cut my escape off. I eventually hid in a garden but was puffing so badly that I gave myself up to a police officer. I did not at that stage know why the police wanted to speak to me. I was certainly not aware that it was anything to do with Gorman. I was not aware of any serious trouble. It was then that I was arrested and taken to the police station.
I make the following general comments with regard to certain matters of which I have been made aware. I do not recall seeing any incident with any girl on the stairway to the club being knocked unconscious or any incident like that. I say however that for much of the evening I was within the club premises itself. With regard to the incident with the television occurring with squirrel this occurred late on and shortly before the incident leading to Mr. Gorman being ejected from the club. I did not regard this as particular trouble however as it appeared to be an accident. It is true to say that there is a video monitor in the club which points towards the stairs. This is simply a monitor and is not I believe a tape. The toilet area is up some stairs but is not so far as I am aware shared with the snooker club upstairs. I am aware now that Karl was involved in some sort of argument at some stage about his girlfriend or former girlfriend. I am not sure of full details. As far as my dress is concerned I say that all my clothes (with the exception of my tie) have been taken by the police for forensic purposes. I was dressed in a white and lightly pinstriped shirt open at the neck. I was wearing black trousers. I was not wearing a jacket. I had previously been wearing a tie but I took this off early in the evening and placed it in my trouser pocket. I was wearing dark socks and lace up black brogues with a leather sole and steel quarter heel. There was no stick on or rubber sole or tread to those shoes. As far as Rod Moore is concerned I can only say that he was wearing a white shirt and dark trousers. As far as Karl is concerned I cannot recall exactly what he was wearing. I thought he was wearing something in red.

The unsolved Murder of Anthony Gorman

In the early hours of Saturday 2nd March 1991, Anthony Gorman was kicked and punched to death on the streets of King’s Lynn, Norfolk. Nobody has stood trial for his death. The Police stopped looking seventeen years ago, so who cares? Well I do for one. The case files are today still stacked up on the floor in the corner of my living room. I intended to write a book or do a screen play about that gruesome night hoping to shed light on the cause of his death. Why me, that’s simple I was one of 4 people originally charged with his murder although I never stood trial for it. Nobody did, why? I’ll let you decide
I don’t know how the law stands on printing extracts from police statements but I’ll worry about that later, should it become a problem. Please understand how time consuming this is, so bare with me I will write when I can.
It will become obvious I have no experience in writing anything of this magnitude. My last literary piece would have been about John Steinbeck’s “Of Mice and Men” for my CSE English exam 30 years ago. Excuse me if I go off in tangents but my brain works a damn sight faster than I can type.
On the 1st March 1991 I was a doorman at the Cellar Bar in King’s Lynn, I had been on and off for about 3 years, at various pubs and clubs in and around town. I got into it by chance. I was a serving member of the Royal Air Force, married with a 2 year old Daughter. My wife had taken a job as cashier at a nightclub that was opening; they said they were looking for Door staff. I applied and got the job. It was great, £50 a night in my back pocket no questions asked. The taxman wouldn’t need to know. Soon I was doing 5 nights a week they even paid me £50 for the under 18’s disco, I was loving it. With all this money coming in my wife didn’t need to work and could concentrate on looking after our daughter, it would be 2 years before my son was born. I had served 10 years for Queen and country with 3 years in Germany and a 4 months tour in the Falklands. The only action I saw was in the NAAFI on a Saturday night fighting the Army and Navy.
My wife and I had spoken often about me getting out of the Air Force; I wanted my Daughter to go through school with the same friends. Unlike me, I went to 9 different schools, always having to move because of my dad’s job. He was a shipping agent and we moved from Hull where I was born to Middlesborough then Grimsby and finally just after I had left school to Liverpool. I wanted better for my little girl so I applied to buy myself out of the RAF. The money from the door work was about the same as I was getting in the RAF. My discharge came through and I enrolled on a city and guilds course to learn bricklaying. The door work enabled me to do that.
Prior to 1991 I had had several run ins with the Police usually over fighting, I didn’t hate them I actually got a kick out of pitting my wits against them in the courtroom. The funny thing was I won all but one of our little battles in court and was found not guilty. I knew how much that pissed them off but to me at that time it was a game. I never envisaged all out war, with them eventually dropping an atom bomb on me.
An incident that really pissed the Police off occurred a couple of months before Tony Gorman’s murder. A friend of mine had been seeing a girl while her boyfriend was in prison. Needless to say it didn’t go down to well when the boyfriend found out. So when he got home leave he apparently paid a couple of idiots to give my mate a pasting. He told my friend that even though he was in prison he could still get to him. The Police were called and the bloke was arrested and put in the Police cells waiting to go back to Norwich nick. I wasn’t very happy when I heard about it later that day so I went to the Police station and told them I was the son of the prisoner they had in custody. They let me in for a visit and soon I found myself face to face with a bloke I didn’t even know. After I had finished what I went to do I told him that even though he was in prison I could still get to him. I calmly walked out of the station and on my way. I was later contacted by the Police about this incident as the prisoner had made a complaint but I denied any knowledge. They didn’t pursue it very hard as it would have only made them look incompetent.
In 1991 I worked on the door of the Cellar bar in King’s Lynn. During the day I worked as a lorry driver for a firm called BDS. They were builders merchants. I had passed my city and guilds but the housing market was on a steep decline, leading to a crash in house prices. There are some that would try and pin that one on me too. The Cellar Bar was a small venue and as the name suggests was probably at some time the cellar of the building above. To gain entry you had to descend a flight of stairs that had a landing half way down. I had spoken to Tony Gorman and his friend Gary Sewell on a number of occasions prior to the 1st of March. Gary Sewell had told me he was a good friend of my brother in law. They would always come to me for a chat when they first arrived. My impression of them was of been loud, always with a story to tell, a couple of jack the lads trying to impress. Not that much different from most of the lads that came in the club. I never found them to be threatening, yes they might have had the odd argument but that was more to do with lads having a few too many. As far as trouble went I wasn’t aware of any. I always gave them the benefit of the doubt they were mates of my brother in law after all.
I will now give you an abridged version of what happened that night. I will go into it in much more detail when I plough through the statements, the taped interviews and the forensic evidence. As I write this I have to explain I sit here knowing I didn’t do it. So I know what things to question. The Police when conducting their enquiries didn’t have that advantage but if they had started off with at the very least an open mind I’m sure that would have helped them find the killers. Lots of people who remember the case will already have an opinion about who killed Tony Gorman and I’m sure most of them think it was me. I’m not here trying to change that, what I’m trying to do is put in the public domain evidence that was never put before a court. Let’s face it not a great deal of facts were ever put before the magistrates and when they were the case collapsed.
I will start 1st by telling you who I was charged with. Rod Moore, he was also a doorman and a friend of mine working that night. Karl Sxxxxxxn was a friend of mine, and Gary Withers, he was charged several months into the investigation. I didn’t know him. So to the night in question. Very briefly what happened from my point of view was. Forget that I’ll do it like the Police did, which in my opinion is were they went wrong. But as an outline what happened is Tony Gorman got chased from the Tuesday Market Place ( for those who don’t know that’s about 150 yards away from the club) by a group of lads.
I’ve put in a map. The yellow dot is the Cellar Bar, the red route is the route I took after I left the club, the red dot is where I spoke to Robert White ( he was with Gorman that night and was a friend of his ). The blue and white dot is where Gorman was 1st confronted by a group of people, the blue route showing the chase and the blue and black dot showing where he was eventually caught, beat up and later died. It’s important that I put that in early because I expect I will be referring to it quite a bit. Another thing to bear in mind which is important is although somewhere in the region of a couple of hundred statements were taken only 2 people actually saw the fighting. I think about 6 more might have seen the chase. Gary Sewell was with Gorman when 1st approached by the group of lads and his evidence you would think was crucial to solving the murder as he heard the conversation leading up to the chase and had the best view of the culprits. We’ll ignore that for the time been (the Police certainly did ). So instead of taking statements from the Boy and Girl who actually saw the assault the Police chose 1st to interview the staff of the Cellar Bar. I’ll just add that the staff were told to remain together at the club where they discussed together what they thought had happened. They then fell asleep there for several hours before giving statements.
